Environmental Compliance

With an increasing demand for sustainable energy solutions, we offer a diverse range of systems, together with expert advice and guidance regarding energy efficiency and sustainability. Whilst this misconception is changing, some people believe that using more environmentally friendly methods may mean higher costs. In fact, the savings you can make from investing in goods that conform to the latest environmental compliance standards could save you money long-term.

"Our engineers assess the efficiency and environmental impact of existing equipment & suggest improvements to reduce the carbon footprint. These can ultimately provide efficiency savings."

Our dedicated team have a wealth of experience in ensuring environmental compliances and work across many areas, including: Derby, Grantham, Hucknall, Leicester, Loughborough, Mansfield, Newark & Nottingham

The F-Gas Regulations

Free standing unitIntroduced in July 2007, the F-Gas Regulation places a legal obligation on the 'operators' (end users) of refrigeration and air conditioning equipment to reduce emissions of greenhouse gases such as refrigerants, through better containment and leakage prevention to ensure environmental compliance.

All systems containing more than 3kg of refrigerant, must have a minimum of one maintenance inspection and leak test every year. Accurate records of these inspections must be kept. At Belmar Services Ltd, we would advise inspections for all systems in order to keep them operating effectively and efficiently. Inspections and testing on plants over 3kg should be carried out every 6 months. Systems containing over 30kg of refrigerant should be checked every three months or more frequently if necessary.

The F-Gas Regulation also makes it a criminal offence for any air conditioning company to carry out activities involving the installation, maintenance or repair of refrigeration, air conditioning or heat pump equipment, without holding a full company F-Gas certificate.

Air Conditioning Energy Assessment

From 2011, a new directive to improve the energy-efficiency of air conditioning systems in Commercial buildings was introduced, which is a mandatory requirement.

This means that all businesses operating air conditioning systems with a collective output of 12kw or more must have it inspected by a registered assessor, which will provide a report detailing whether / where increases in energy efficiency could be achieved.

R22 Phase Out

R22 was until 2002 a commonly used refrigerant in cooling and air conditioning equipment. However, studies have shown the damage it can cause to the ozone layer, adversely affecting the environment as a result, new legislation now places restrictions on its use.

It is now illegal to use reclaimed R22 or other reclaimed HCFC's for servicing refrigeration and air conditioning equipment. This legislative change, taken by the EU, is to reduce harmful carbon emissions and will affect the entire Heating Ventilation and Air Conditioning industry.

If your system is gas tight you DO NOT have to remove the reclaimed R22 contained within it. However, please be aware, that if or when the system leaks, the refrigerant will have to be replaced with a suitable alternative.

Belmar Services Ltd today can help find out if you're using R22 gases & help to build a strategy for replacement needs within your company. We may be able to help you offset any capital costs against your annual tax bill and will almost certainly be able to show ways to reduce your energy bills and carbon footprint.

Modern air conditioning systems offer more than double the efficiency levels of 10-15 year old systems and can also be far more efficient than traditional methods of cooling and heating buildings, resulting in reduced running costs and lower carbon emissions. All major end-users of air conditioning that uses R22 will need to consider the alternatives.

RHI - Renewable Heat Incentive

The Renewable Heat Incentive is a funding mechanism created by the government to encourage the installation of renewable energy technologies. The non-domestic phase of the scheme provides businesses, large and small with income for generating their own energy through renewables, such as a ground, water or air source heat pump. Businesses will receive a regular quarterly payment for the next 20 years, which provides long term and sustainable growth in the use of renewable technologies.

Air Source Heat Pumps are refrigerant based systems, like your refrigerator at home. The system can absorb low grade heat from the air, and raise its temperature efficiently to be suitable to heat radiators, underfloor heating systems, warm air convectors and hot water. They can get heat from the air even when the temperature is as low as -15°C. Heat pumps have some impact on the environment as they need electricity to run, but the heat they extract from the ground, air, or water is constantly being renewed naturally.
